The Ice Man cometh .. again

mood: amused amused

As sent to me:

"I think we're gonna have to contend with a Vanilla Ice revival. I was at the V Festival, where Virgin had brought him over as a joke to publicise their hopelessly wrongheaded campaign to get pop stars to apologise for supposed crimes against music.

"The last laugh was against them. Vanilla Ice was way more popular than the supposed headliners The Killers. We couldn't even get anywhere near the building let alone get inside. We looked and we saw through a window a little of the performance. When the bassline from Ice Ice Baby came on, I have to admit, even though I've been to many festivals over the years including most of the Glastonburys of the 90's, I have never, NEVER, seen a reaction quite like it."

jQuery Radio button show/hide

Mar. 13th, 2009 | 11:37 am
location: EC1R
mood: happy happy

This is of absolutely no interest to anyone on my Flist, except if you're learning jQuery like me. ;) I've just written a function to show/hide some divs based on a radio button selection, and tried to make it as extensible as possible. I wanted to record it somewhere. I gotta get myself a tech blog, but for the moment it's here.

move along, nothing to see here )

Shoes

Someone recently told me a trite poem about friends - but I think it works better in the context of shoes:

You have shoes for a season (like my purple slouch boots which are probably for this winter only..)

You have a shoes for a reason (hiking boots, trainers etc)

And you have shoes for life (well, in London that's not strictly true, they wear out too bloody fast .. but definitely I love my docs, and will continue to replace them as they wear out..)

Hehe..

.. if you are into web dev that is..

You put this grid as the background image during development and it'll help you line things up:

Such a simple idea, and so obvious, yet I don't think I would've thought of it.

WCAG 2.0 is released

Jan. 5th, 2009 | 11:18 am
location: EC1R
mood: shocked shocked

So before Christmas we finally had the release of the next Web Contents Accessibility Guidelines (v.2.0). Years and years and YEARS in the writing, it's going to take Accessibility into .. well at least 2006. Hopefully 2009. ;)

I completed a few audits using the guidelines towards the end of the year (pre-release) and it seems pretty sound. There were a few issues, and I think a lot more supporting documentation is required - particularly in terms of the techniques and pass and fail tests.

I'm not sure whose bright idea it was to make a musical theme to help launch the guidelines, but make one they did. And it is Christian-rock-cringingly awful. I watched in horror, with mouth open and gasping at intervals. Shuddering.

Go on, watch it. I dare you:

I walked out of the door this morning to a crisp, blue sky'ed day. That is bloody cold! There was a chill breeze running through the 'stow that was almost headache-inducing.

I'm at work now and my Vista temperature widget tells me it's 3degrees outside.

Repost about St James Cars, Walthamstow

Nov. 14th, 2008 | 06:19 pm
location: EC1R
mood: angry angry

From my housemate:

I just thought I would warn people of a MiniCab company in Walthamstow and the surrounding area.

ST. JAMES CARS is a cab Company I advise you not to use. I have had no trouble with them in the past, but after using them on Monday, I have had the driver of the cab I took waiting outside my house today (3 days after the cab journey) trying to expose himself and get my number as I came home.

Now I know it is not the companys fault, but the police are yet to arrest this driver, so he may still be doing shifts and call outs.

If you think it is relevant please pass this on to others (especially girls/women) that live in the east London area, it's really freaked me out and I don't want other women having guys like this finding out where they live.

The cab company often post little cards through my front door, and they are usually very good, but please be careful.

After speaking to the police they gave me this advice:

When booking a cab, ask for the drivers name, car description and licence number of who will be picking you up. Make a note of them and keep it written down and keep it somewhere in your house. Get a good look at the driver when they arrive to collect you.
Although nothing will probably happen, it's worth it, as today, 3 days after my cab journey, when he appeared at my house and I called the police, all I could give were the time he picked me up on Monday and what he was wearing today when he appeared at my house, and that's not very helpful when making a complaint to the police!

Stay safe guys

new website

I've quietly snuck up the new Alternative Bring and Buy website. It's not fully browser tested yet, but if I don't get something up there now now now, then the sale will be over before the website is launched!

If you do have a few mins to check it out, I'd really appreciate it. We'll hang off from shouting about it for a day or so to make sure there's nothing catastrophic I've managed to miss. Oh - except that I know the JS code on the banners page isn't working with FFox just now.

Right, I'm off to bed.

Things I love about London #12

Oct. 27th, 2008 | 05:43 pm
location: EC1R
mood: amused amused

(although I've not actually filled in 1-11, but anyway)

I was walking along Oxford street, slightly 'softened' by 1.5 after-work pints of ale when I got to House of Fraser. There in the large-paned show window (usually occupied with exquisitely dressed mannequins staring vacuously into space), was a real life handsome gentleman dressed in a Tuxedo, crooning away (Sinatra style) into a microphone. Behind him was a guy in DJ headphones at some sort of sound desk.

Large speakers filled the street with smooth music. Crowded outside the window were a bunch of excited Japanese tourists, snapping away. And as I threaded through them I couldn't help but grin.

It was so weird and random. I just love that shit.
